Patton Project News

On March 26, 2012, the first official donation of handmade quilts and pillowcases was delivered to the AI Dupont Hospital for Children. Family and Consumer Science teachers Betsy Ballard and Kimberly Hisler were joined by students Cara Freedman and Philip Chidekel as Dr. Aaron Chidekel and Alaina Norvell, Director of Child Life, accepted the handmade items created by the Charles F. Patton Middle School’s 8th grade Patton Project class. The quilts and pillowcases will go to children who are in the hospital in hopes of brightening their day and providing a bit of comfort. Each item is completely made by the students as part of their giving back to the community through the elective class, which focuses their efforts not on themselves but to those in need in our community. Through the Patton Project students spend time in the greenhouse and raised beds learning about nutrition, healthy eating, and growing your own vegetables while cultivating and harvesting the vegetables and fruits to be donated to the Kennett Food Cupboard and Chester County Food Bank. During their time in the sewing labs, students are taught the basics of construction and design and execute warm flannel quilts and pillowcase to reach out to sick children. These fine young adults realize the value of helping their neighbors and the joy that comes from touching the lives of others.
