Community Service Award

The 2011 Environmental Community Service Award was presented to the Charles F. Patton Middle School on April 15, 2011.  The goal of the Environmental Community Service award is to raise awareness of environmental concerns and to recognize middle and high schools in the Delaware Valley for their efforts in environmental service projects that enhance and improve the quality of life in their communities. Family and Consumer Science teachers Betsy Ballard and Kimberly Hisler were told on April 8th that their application had been chosen from nearly 50 applicants to win the $5000.00 award. Applicants programs were judged by experts in the field of the environment and science and included representatives from The Franklin Institute, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, Pennsylvania and New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection, and Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control along with representatives from each sponsor -- Wawa, NBC 10 and the law firm of Manko, Gold, Katcher and Fox, LLP . The award was presented to the school on Friday, April 15 by NBC 10 anchor Terry Ruggles, Wawa's Fred Wood, and Robb Fox from MGKF. After the award ceremony students from CFPMS showed their guests the greenhouse and raised bed project and picked over 19 lbs of fresh spinach which was delivered to the local food cupboard bringing the overall total of donations to 70 lbs!  The event will be televised on NBC 10 on Friday, April 22 as well as articles appearing in all local newspapers,
