Sixth Grade Gives Back!

Did you know that 95% of the public schools in Philadelphia have NO functioning library? The West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, or WEPAC, strives to address that devastating issue. WePAC renovates and opens closed elementary school libraries, collects and donates books to the libraries, and provides trained volunteers to staff and run the libraries. Starting in 2009 with two schools, WEPAC currently operates libraries in 14 public schools in Philadelphia and has dozens more schools on its waiting list. The sixth grade mixer held last Friday raised almost $400 to donate to this worthy organization. Great job, sixth graders!

Writers Needed!

Patton's 2nd Annual Writers Day is May 1 - and we're looking for writers! Writers Day is a Writing Conference for kids. We are looking for community members who write within their job requirements or for personal enrichment (and everything in between) to workshop with groups of 20-25 students in the morning. The students bring a notebook and a pencil to your assigned classroom and learn something about writing--from you! Last year, we had community members lead sessions on food blogging, social media marketing, technical writing, advertising, personal journaling, writing for business, journalism, developing a script, historical research, legal writing, science fiction, and many other interesting topics. You do not need to consider yourself a professional writer in order to participate. Follow the link below to sign-up!

Proud to Plant!

On Monday, Patton 6th Graders, as part of our Olweus program, participated in a service project to benefit the Chester County Food Bank. Facilitated by teacher Jenny Steinen, each Advisory class worked together to plant spinach, beets, lettuce and cilantro seeds into flats, with 128 pots per flat.   The flats will be brought  to a greenhouse to germinate, and then back to Patton this spring, for our students to plant in our garden tunnels. This will translate to thousands of healthy, fresh vegetable plants that will be donated to the Chester County Food Bank. Another great example of Patton Pride, as our students are literally, and figuratively, planting the seeds of kindness and service. Check out some photos of the event here.
