Heart & Sole at Patton!

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is excited to start a new chapter of its middle school program, Heart & Sole, at Patton this fall! This program, headed by Patton parent Sue Holinsky, begins the week of September 19 and ends with our 5K event on Saturday, December 3 in Downingtown. Our team is planning on meeting every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:20 - 4 pm at Patton. Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond.

The Heart & Sole curriculum is rich with themes girls can relate to, addressing the whole girl—body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection—and building important life skills such as team building, developing a support system, boundary setting, decision making, asking for and providing help and more.

Use this link for a Heart & Sole registration flyer as well as a coach recruitment flyer - we are in need of at least two more coaches to have the program run. Parents and staff members make excellent coaches!

Spring Mural!

This Spring a mural grew in the art room hallway! Students in the Art After School Program started a chain reaction by painting mural pieces that represented their interests and hobbies. The young artists created original designs in the style of Matisse's paper cutouts. After completing their individual piece the group worked together to frame the bulletin board with multi colored Sun flowers. Kriti Gupta chose to use the Hawk Mascot as her inspiration and painted several Hawks in flight. Kids in the Art Club on Friday afternoon added their special touch by painting rainbow ribbons trailing from the Hawks. The finishing touches were glued on by students in regular Art classes. They completed the mural by filling in spaces with mosaic tiles and glass bubbles. We love the end result! See all the photos right here!

PennDOT Engineers at Patton

Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation took the time to share their experience and expertise with the students in Mr. Palo's Technology & Engineering class last Thursday. Civil Engineer/Project Manager Leanne Fullard and Civil Engineer/Bridge Inspector Kevin Sutow shared information about the bridges in our area and information about what it is like to be a civil engineer. One of the key topics of discussion was the "Pocopson Bridge" replacement project at the intersection of route 926 & Pocopson road which will effect these students and 13,000 citizens daily.  The information and time that they shared is greatly appreciated by the students. Here are just a few of the comments that the students shared after the presentation.

"Something that I found very interesting about the civil engineer's presentation was that there are about 22,000 bridges in PA."

"I found it very interesting that much testing was needed for a bridge inspection and data collection from scuba diving to the foundation to the hydraulic engineering needed for flood safety."

"What I found to be interesting from the civil engineer's presentation was that there are people like Mr. Sutow who goes under the bridges after being built and work on the technology of it."

This special visit directly ties to the structural engineering unit found in Patton's award winning Technology & Engineering program. Mr. Palo commented..."I was thrilled when PennDOT agreed to honor my request to come and share their expertise with our students, for a learning connection was made that they will remember for the rest of their lives." This is an example of the impacts that businesses and other entities can make if they take the time to team up with their local schools to create more "real world" S.T.E.M. connections.

Patton at Kennett Head Start

Patton Middle School Student Council visited the Kennett Square Head Start Program on Tuesday, May 3rd. The Student Council donated over 100 bilingual and English children’s books for the Literacy Initiative supported by Project Head Start. While at the facility, the council members bonded with the youngsters by reading, sharing circle time activities, and engaging the students in puzzle making, clay cutting and tower building. Another main focus of the visit was to organize and establish a lending library from which the preschoolers will greatly benefit. Teachers at the facility shared with our students the importance of the lending library to the students and their families. This experience was as important and enriching to our middle school students as it was to the Head Start children! We are hopeful that this experience will be the beginning of an ongoing relationship with this special school. Our council members will be attending the graduation celebration of these students on Thursday, May 19 and handing out special books to each young student to honor their accomplishments. We are #PattonProud!

Empty Bowls Dinner

Patton Middle School Art teacher Sherri Schultz and her art club did a fantastic job of supporting the Kennett Food Cupboard this February. The dinner is a charity event created to raise funds to support the Food Cupboard and Kennett Community Services. This is one more example of Patton Middle School students and staff making the effort to help those in need in our immediate area. A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Schultz and her club for making a difference and for making us ‪#‎PattonProud‬! Check out the wonderful photos right here.

Positive Impact!

On Tuesday, December 22nd, the 8th grade students and staff engaged in a day of improving communication, problem-solving skills, and building relationships at Neumann University. Built on the foundation of a Full Value Contract, students and staff promised to keep each other safe in body and spirit as they experienced situations where the value of put ups replaced the very human fault of put downs. As group dynamics expert, and leader for the day, Craig Erb explained to our students, "The same challenges which you faced today in these activities are the same challenges that you will face in school, in relationships, and in the workplace. The same solutions which you faced today in these activities are the same solutions that you will use in school, in relationships, and in the workplace." As a staff, we are so pleased with the effort and engagement of our students on this trip--so many laughs, smiles, and positive energy were generated in a unique out-of-the-classroom experience! Check out the great photos right here!
